Menstrual hygiene service

Target audiences: Any interested adolescent girls and women

Importance of services: Only 27.7 % of young women aged 15–24 have access to adequate menstrual health and hygiene resources. <50% young women are not aware on importance of sanitary pads during menstrual cycle. Usage of sanitary pads vary from 34.5% to 70%. High regional inequalities.

The adolescent girls and women population face several socio-cultural, economic, and psychological challenges:

  • Socio-cultural issues: No one in villages, speaks about this menstrual hygiene; Community also thinks this menstrual period as negative for the society; various taboos discriminate to talk about this issue.
  • Economic issues: Most of the adolescent girls and women go to local hospitals or private doctors for treatment of menstrual related problems. They spend money for traveling to the local market and also pays good amount to private doctors. Their livelihood also impacts access to good nutrition, healthcare and medications. Adolescent girls and women don’t get regular supply of sanitary pads to their doorstep.
  • Psychological issues: Adolescent girls and women lack sensitivity of the issue from their family members, leading to anxiety etc.

Define the services: We have designed a 12 months comprehensive service package, that aims to reach out to adolescent girls and in India and make them aware of importance of hygiene, nutrition and healthy practices during menstrual period.

The comprehensive service package includes:

  • Monthly meeting: Make them aware and sensitize on different information related to menstrual hygiene through monthly IPC meetings.
  • WhatsApp intervention: Share them short videos related to monthly meeting contents, fortnightly through WhatsApp intervention.
  • Live broadcast session with specialized lady doctor: Help them to share their problems with specialized lady doctor in fortnightly live broadcasting sessions and get the appropriate solutions.
  • Availability of sanitary pads: Distribute good quality sanitary pads during monthly IPC meetings to them for use during menstrual cycle.

Service charge: The adolescent girls and women are required to pay one-time non-refundable registration fees of Rs. 100 only, and then service charge of Rs. 30 only every month to get above mentioned services.
